Obituary

Ted R. Sailor, age 87, of Sturgis, Michigan, passed away on June 11, 2026, at Thurston Woods Village, where he peacefully passed into Heaven’s Gate under the care of the nursing staff. He was born on September 5, 1938, in Elkhart, Indiana, and lived a life marked by devotion to his family, service to his country, and quiet strength.

Ted was a proud and hardworking man whose life reflected steadfast commitment and integrity. He served his country in the United States Army from 1959 to 1962, carrying with him the sense of duty and discipline that would continue to guide him throughout his life. Following his military service, he worked as a Tool and Die maker by trade, a profession that suited his skill, patience, and attention to detail. His work ethic and dependable nature earned the respect of those who knew him.

Ted was a man who deeply valued family throughout his life. He was united in marriage to his beloved wife, Ruth (Rank) Sailor, for 62 years. Together they created a family that was central to Ted’s life and brought him great joy. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; his daughter, Janell (John) Mechling; his son, John Sailor; his grandsons, Josh Mechling and Jacob (Courtney) Mechling; his great-granddaughters, Evelette and Sadie Mechliy; his son-in-law, Glenn Pignato; his sister, Leann Ashburn; and nieces who will remember him with affection. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Alma (Zimmerman) Sailor; his infant brother, Tommy; and his daughter, Sharon (Sailor) Pignato.

Ted’s life was also enriched by the simple things that brought him peace and happiness. He loved the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a place that held a special meaning for him and reflected his appreciation for the beauty and quiet of the outdoors. Whether through travel, reflection, or shared time with loved ones, he found joy in the places and moments that felt most true to him. Those who knew Ted will remember his steady presence, his kind heart, and the way he carried himself with humility and grace.

He leaves behind a legacy of service, family devotion, and enduring love. Ted’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him, especially those who shared in his life and were touched by his warmth and strength. Though he will be deeply missed, his family takes comfort in the many years they were given with him and in the lasting example he set through the life he lived.

A Celebration of Life for Ted will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at the Fawn River Missionary Church, 28201 E Fawn River Rd, Sturgis, MI 49091.
