October 5, 1946 – May 24, 2019
Raymond E. Monty, 72 of Sturgis, passed away May 24, 2019 in Portage after battling cancer. Ray was born in Detroit on October 5, 1946, a son of Raymond and Irene (Reed) Monty. He graduated from Quincy High School in 1964 and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy for 6 years. After receiving an honorable discharge, he worked in many different trades in several states, before moving his family to Michigan in 1990. Ray then attended Glen Oaks Community College, and later taught computer science there, retiring after 10+ years.
On April 7, 1984, he married Cynthia Pacheco. After 33 years of marriage they divorced, but remained very close friends. Ray was very active in coaching at G.O.C.C., Burr Oak, Sturgis and Centreville and was known to many in the community as Coach Monty. The highlight of his career was coaching his granddaughter Olivia as the assistant coach for the 2018 Centreville Softball State Champion team. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, tinkering around the house, and attending his grandchildren's sporting events.
Surviving are his children Tim Monty of Illinois, Shawna (Jay) Koontz of Centreville, and Michael (Maryann) Monty of Sturgis; ex-wife and friend Cyndi Monty of Centreville; grandchildren Serena and Joey Monty, Olivia and Sophia Deeds, and Malachi and Dominic Monty; and sister Dorothy Skinner of Bronson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Brandi Cechini, and grandson Landon Monty.

Pastor David Peterson, Centreville Baptist Church, will officiate. Cremation will then take place and a private interment of ashes will occur in Ft. Custer National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the family, c/o Cyndi Monty.
