Mary
Jolls-Keyser
May 5, 1936 — Jul 18, 2026
Landrum, South Carolina
Mary passed away on July 18, 2026 comfortably and peacefully at the Hospice House in Landrum, SC. Born in Onondaga, MI to Edmond Jolls and Bessie Nulph on May 5, 1936, she is survived by her eldest son Brian Mitchell, second son Greg Mitchell and her daughter-in-law Susan Hancock; and her daughter Ronda Bingley and husband Leo Bingley II and grandson Leo Bingley III. Mary had two brothers; Loran (1925-2002) who served on a battleship in the Pacific with the US Navy during World War II; and Karl (1930-1970) who also served in the Navy. She was married twice; to Ronald Mitchell (1958-1973) and Wayne Keyser (1973-2021).
Mary spent most of her youth in Boyne City, MI among her mother’s grandparents and cousins. She moved to Jackson, MI in 1948 and graduated cum laude from Jackson High School in 1954. After this she continued working as a bank teller until she married Ronald and started her family in 1958. After Brian was born, they moved to the Detroit, MI area where Greg was born, leaving for the Kalamazoo area in 1963. Her last child Ronda was born there in 1965. In 1967 the family moved again this time to rural St. Joseph County to a little town called Centreville. Here Mom raised her three children, much of it by herself. She was separated from Ron in 1972 and divorced and remarried to Wayne Keyser in 1973. She worked at the First National Bank as a teller until getting a job with the State of Michigan Social Services in 1977, which she retired from in 1998. She was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and very active in the United Methodist Church. She also faithfully attended all her kids’ school functions over the years, being totally devoted to her children.
After retiring she moved with Wayne to a lake house he had bought and remodeled near Union, MI. Here she enjoyed entertaining friends and relatives and playing cards and going to casinos near Lake Michigan. She also did some travelling around the US to visit national parks and her children in Oregon, Colorado, California, Minnesota, and Texas. Wayne and her also took annual two-week trips to Boyne City until 2014 to spend time at a Nulph family house she had inherited in 1986 which overlooked Lake Charlevoix. There they would visit her cousins and hunt for morel mushrooms in the woods. And go to the local casino of course.
In 2021 her husband Wayne died and Mom’s kids moved her to Columbus, NC to an apartment in an independent living facility near her son Greg. Here she made many friends with her cheerfulness and good humor. She liked to play bingo and other games with them, watch TV and movies, and do word puzzles and other brain teaser games. Thanks to her daughter Ronda she even managed to take a few trips to local casinos. She loved celebrating holidays and special occasions and fought to make it to her 90th birthday! Her kids and grandson visited often and took care of her until the end. Everyone who encountered her usually left smiling and more joyful. Mary will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
