Marjorie Ella Powell passed away September 6, 2019 at Heartland Health Center in Three Rivers, Michigan. She was born December 13, 1921 in Fabius Township, MI, the daughter of Jesse and Lela (Whitehead) Munger. Marjorie graduated with the class of 1939 from Cassopolis High School. On January 6, 1946 she married James Elwood Powell in Sturgis. He preceded her in death on May 18, 2013.
Marjorie worked part-time in four separate offices in the Cass County Court House, then worked full time in a 5 and Dime Store in Cassopolis, and later worked in the First National Bank in Cassopolis. It was then that she met her future husband. After she married, she and her husband lived in Cassopolis and had their only child, a daughter, Karen Marie Powell. They then moved to Constantine November, 1948 and lived on a small farm on Mintdale Road.
On May 13, 1959, the family moved to their present home on Washington Street in Constantine. She held several jobs over time (Breneman Hartshorn and Paul Noecker Insurance Agency) until finally working in the St. Joseph County Courthouse in Centreville as a Deputy County Treasurer in the Treasurer's Office, retiring in 1978 after 23 years as Chief Deputy County Treasurer.
Marjorie was a member of the Constantine United Methodist Church where she was a member of the choir and was a soloist for many events. She also served as a Sunday School teacher for nearly all ages groups. Marjorie enjoyed reading, cooking, and Christian music. She and Elwood spent several years in retirement wintering in Sebring, Florida.
Surviving are her daughter, Karen Powell, Constantine and many nieces and nephews. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings Dorothy (Otto) Smith, Laura (Sam) Riley, Allen (Flora) Munger, and Carol (Robert) Lamberton.
Relatives and friends will be received at the Eley Funeral Home in Constantine on Tuesday, September 10th from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm. Religious services will be held on Wednesday, September 11th at 11:00am at the Constantine United Methodist Church. Pastor Tiffany Newsom will officiate. Interment will be in Constantine Township Cemetery, and a luncheon will be served afterwards at the church.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Constantine United Methodist Church.
